What They're Saying

For the first time in my 11 years of teaching I feel my class truly has a good grasp of fractions. Great job getting my kids there!

The Grade 5 Year

The fifth grade year builds on the concepts, skills, and visual models developed in earlier grades. Students hone their mathematical communication skills and become more independent problem solvers, preparing to meet the challenges of middle school mathematics with confidence and fluency.

Students use manipulatives and models to make sense of multi-digit multiplication and division, fractions and decimals, probability, data analysis, algebraic thinking, 2- and 3-dimensional geometry, and measurement. Challenge activities and Work Place partner games provide differentiated practice that reinforces and extends concepts and skills introduced during whole-group work. Number Corner insures that students revisit key math skills, while Home Connections provide at-home practice several times a week. Word Resource cards and journals help students master new terms and practice mathematical communication.

An integrated math-science unit featuring spinning tops culminates the year. All units include pre- and post-assessments, as well as work samples suitable for student portfolios.
