About Visual Mathematics
Visual Mathematics is an innovative middle school program built around the NCTM Standards. It began as a collection of suggestions for implementing the Math and the Mind's Eye philosophy and teaching activities. After extensive field testing Visual Math expanded to a series of three one-year courses for students in grades 5-10.
In a Visual Math classroom students become active participants who discuss their mathematical thinking. Activity-based investigations emphasize conceptual understanding and problem solving. Models and manipulatives provide the context for learning about important mathematical relationships
Students explore number theory, fractions, decimals, measurement, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics, and more. Topics resurface in new or expanded contexts across the program, allowing students to broaden and deepen their mathematical understanding and to see how topics are related.
What They're Saying
Since implementing this program there is an excitement about coming to math class. Even reluctant learners have smiles on their faces and I seldom hear negative comments about math. Students are eager to share what they can do with their classmates.
